Abdul momen also said that Saudi Arabia is pressuring Bangladesh to issue Bangladeshi passports to 54,000 Rohingyas staying there, otherwise, 22 lakh Bangladeshis working there are being threatened to be sent back. informing the foreign ministers of the two countries will hold an emergency meeting on Sunday.
About 11 lakh Rohingyas are now living in Bangladesh, including 3 lakh who were already there.
On the other hand, the Saudi authorities sheltered thousands of Rohingya in the 80s and 90s for humanitarian reasons. Many Rohingyas also went there with fake Bangladeshi passports.
Bangladesh has formed a committee headed by the foreign secretary to verify the documents of the Rohingyas at the request of Saudi Arabia. However, international relations analysts have advised not to succumb to pressure.
He said diplomatic relations with all states need to be strengthened. Bangladesh will state its position if the Saudi foreign minister raises the issue in an emergency meeting on September 27.
