The documents in the sensational Rifat Sharif murder case reached the High Court today as a death reference to examine the trial court verdict that sentenced six people including Ayesha Siddika Minni to death.
Officials of the Barguna court brought the documents of the case, including the judgment, to the High Court on Sunday.
If a lower court sentences any person to death in a case, its judgment is examined by the HC through hearing arguments for confirmation of the death sentence. The case documents and judgment reach as death reference to the HC from the lower court in seven days after the latter delivers the verdict.
A Barguna court on September 30 handed down death sentence to six people over the murder of Rifat Sharif, an incident that shocked the entire nation.
District and Sessions Judge of Barguna Md Asaduzzaman also fined the convicts Tk 50 thousand.
The court on January 1 framed charges against the 10 young accused, including Minni.
However, the trial of 14 juvenile accused was going on at Barguna Juvenile Court over the same incident.
On September 1, last year, police submitted two charge sheets to the court, accusing 14 juveniles and 10 adults in the case.
According to the case, Rifat Sharif, 22, an internet service provider, was hacked to death in front of Minni in broad daylight in Barguna town on June 26, 2019. The incident was caught on a surveillance camera.
The brutal murder sparked widespread public outrage across the country after the footage of the murder incident went viral on social media.
In a video clip, Minni was seen screaming and trying to save Rifat from the attackers. However, Minni was arrested a few days later on charges of being involved with the killing.
After the incident, Rifat’s father filed a murder case with Barguna Sadar Police Station.
Prime accused Sabbir Hossain Nayan alias Nayan Bond was killed in a gunfight with law enforcers on July 2 after his arrest in connection with the Rifat murder.
