Shawon Khandakar Shahin (33), General secretary of Madhabadi Thana Press Club, has been acquitted in a Digital Security Act (ICT) case filed by the police. In the same case, a local newspaper journalist Shanto Bonik (35) was exempted. Wednesday (March 02) wise judge of the cyber tribunal of Dhaka, Mohammad Assams Jagulul Hossain, rejected two journalists mentioned from the case. Journalist Shawon Khandakar Shahin Online News Portal Narsingdi, who was exempted, was exempted and publisher.

On April 30, 2020, Zahirul Alam, in-charge of Ghorashal police outpost in Narsingdi, filed a case against Shawon Khandakar Shahin, editor of online news portal Narsingdi Pratidin, Shanto Banik, administrative officer of daily Grameen Darpan and Ramzan Ali Pramanik, news editor of the same newspaper. were imprisoned for 47 days in bail from the court. Then on October 7, 2020, the first attendance’s day of the case was set up in the Cyber Tribunal of Dhaka. When the three journalists appeared in the tribunal on that date, the wise judge police report was not involved as the news editor of The Daily Grameen Darpan ‘, because Ramajan Ali pramanic exempted authenticity.

On the other hand, in the light of the police report, the name of Sharif Iqbal Rashel, the Narsingdi district representative of Bangla TV, has been added in the case. In the end, a total of three journalists were acquitted in the case but the trial against Sharif Iqbal Rashel will continue, court sources said.

After being acquitted of the case, Khandakar Shahin expressed his gratitude to Allah Ta’ala and said, “I am being held for 47 days in the case of Digital Security Act filed by the police against me on April 30, 2020 in an unfortunate incident at Ghorashal of Palash police station.” But I was not involved in it in any way. Eventually a fair trial was established by acquittal.

He further said, “I respectfully remember the late eminent columnist, daily Bangladesh Pratidin executive editor Pir Habibur Rahman who, in his first article, condemned and protested our arrest in the ICT case and demanded his release.”
He also thanked the then president of Narsingdi Press Club Makhan Das, general secretary Mazharul Parvez Monti, President of Madhabadi Thana Press Club Al-Amin Sarkar, admin of active group Narsingdi Asaduzzaman Ripon, to Tofail Ahmed Swapan and leaders of district journalists’ organizations for their role.
