Bangladesh Garments Workers and Employees Federation (BGWEF) has made a clarion call to the government to meet their three demands.
The demands are controlling price hike of essentials, introducing full rationing system for workers, and annuncing Tk 23,000 minimum wage in garment factories.
The leaders of BGWEF said sufferings of the ready-made garment workers mount in the wake of skyrocketing prices of all essentials including rice, lentil, edible oil and sugar in the market.
Addrtessing a press conference at Topkhana Road in the capital, the BGWEF central committee president Kamrul Ahsan said prices of essentials have increased so much that it has become difficult for workers to survive. In such a situation, it has become necessary to raise their wages.
“So, we call for the formation of a Wage Board inducting workers’ representatives to fix the minimum wage of garment workers at Tk 23,000,” he said.
Kamrul Ahsan also said lives of garment workers in Bangladesh have become simply intolerable due to price hike and inflation. The living cost has gone beyond the purchasing power of them. The month of Ramadan is ahead. The prices of essential commodities are constantly rising in the market.
The BGWEF leaders also demanded introduction of full rationing system for garment workers as soon as possible.
