Two people were killed and at least 10 bus passengers were seriously injured in a three-way collision involving two buses and a tractor in Lalmai Upazila of Cumilla.
The accident occurred at 6:30pm on Monday (December 22) in a three-way collision involving the Dhaka-bound Jonaki Express, Noakhali-bound Ekushey Express and a tractor in the Boral area of the Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway.
The deceased in the accident are Jasim Uddin (45), the eldest son of Ali Akkas of Joynagar village in Bagmara South Union of Lalmai Upazila, and Zahid Hossain (25) of Kanksar village in Perul North Union.
Upon hearing the news of the accident, a team from Lalmai Army Camp, Lalmai Police Station, and Laksam Crossing Highway Police Station went to the scene and rescued the injured and sent them to the hospital.
Police and locals said that while overtaking a Dhaka-bound Jonaki bus and a red-green bus, they collided with a tractor parked on the side of the road. As a result, the front part of the tractor separated and fell on the side of the road. At that time, it collided with an Ekushey bus coming from the opposite direction.
The tractor owner, Md. Jasim Uddin, died on the spot after being hit by the Jonaki bus. At least 10 people, including the tractor driver Zahid, were seriously injured. Later, locals rescued them and sent them to various hospitals. Among them, the seriously injured tractor driver Zahid died at 11 pm on the way to Dhaka.
Laksam Highway Police Station OC Md. Adel Akbar said, “Two buses and a tractor collided in a three-way collision. One person died on the spot and another died on the way to the hospital. The injured have been admitted to different hospitals.”
