The government has renamed the Bangabandhu Bridge and Bangabandhu Tunnel as Jamuna Bridge and Karnaphuli Tunnel, respectively.

The Bridges Department issued a circular in this regard on Wednesday, stating that this decision will be effective immediately.

Joint Secretary of the Bridges Division, Md. Tabibur Rahman, confirmed this information to reporters.

Incidentally, the four-and-a-half-kilometer-long bridge over the Jamuna River was opened for traffic in June 1998, and the country’s first tunnel under the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong was opened for traffic in October 2023.
