Chief Adviser’s (CA) Deputy Press Secretary, Abul Kalam Azad Majumder has said ensuring media freedom is one of the key goals of the interim government, and this change is now clearly visible.
He came up with the comment in a status posted on the social media platform Facebook on Friday.

In the status, he shared the role of various print, electronic, and online media during the July uprising last year.

At the beginning of the status, Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said, “Four days have passed since July returned to our lives. This month has reminded us of the horrific shootings and killings, and has rekindled a new light of hope and dreams.”

“July brings new hope for the reconstruction of our nation, because now our media is finally starting to take it as its own issue. I have seen some good reports in the media in the last four days explaining why July was inevitable. Some have also expressed disappointment with the achievements of the last few months. But that is normal. When expectations are high, disappointment can also be deep.”

The CA’s Deputy Press Secretary said, “Television channels are airing special programs—without any government order. This is also a big step forward. This is an opportunity for them to correct themselves. During the uprising, they had all the information and footage of the killings, but they could not air it. Now it is time to revisit that July and present to the public what they could not show. The good thing is that they have started doing that.”

“None of our television channels has yet expressed regret for their role during that dictatorial regime. Some TV and newspaper owners directly incited violence. Those who did so will certainly suffer the consequences. However, the interim government has always tried to protect the institution. We did not want to harm any media outlet because of the fault of one individual,” he added.

Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said, ‘We knew about the limitations of television channels. Journalists shared many stories with us, how they were forced to keep information secret, how they were pressured to broadcast government-organized programs. We did not consciously engage in such practices and wanted to ensure that journalists did not have to suffer such feelings. Ensuring media freedom is one of the main goals of the interim government, and this change is now clearly visible.’
