Draft for establishment of UN human rights office in Dhaka approved

The Advisory Council has given final approval to establish a mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Dhaka for three years.
The approval was given at the 33rd meeting of the Advisory Council on Thursday (July 10) chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

A press release from the Cabinet Division said that final approval has been given to the draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Bangladesh based on the proposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On June 29, the draft was presented to the Advisory Council, which gave it in-principle approval. On that day, Legal Advisor Asif Nazrul said that they wanted to open a mission branch of the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) in Bangladesh. They held discussions towards this end. There has been significant progress in the discussions. The MoU for this has been approved in principle in the Advisory Council meeting.

On that day, the Law Adviser said that OHCHR had submitted a very important report on the genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising. We had been in discussions with them for many days. There has been significant progress in the discussions. The MoU on the matter has been approved in principle at the meeting of the Advisory Council. It will be examined a little more by a few advisers. Then it will be finalized and sent to Falkar Turk. If they approve it, it is hoped that the matter can be signed soon. Bases on this, there will be a UN human rights office in Bangladesh.
