The 13th National Parliamentary Election will be held in February next year, before Ramadan, announced Chief Adviser (CA) of the interim government Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
He made the announcement on Tuesday (August 5) night in his address to the nation, which was broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar.

The Chief Adviser said, “On behalf of the interim government, I will send a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, requesting that the Election Commission organize the national election in February 2026, before the upcoming Ramadan.”

He added, “Pray for us so that we can successfully hold the election and move forward in building a ‘New Bangladesh’ where all citizens can participate. The government will provide all necessary assistance to ensure that the election is fair, peaceful, and celebratory.”

Dr. Yunus further stated, “We will begin both mental and institutional preparations from tomorrow to make this election memorable in terms of joy and festivity, peace and order, voter turnout, and mutual goodwill and sincerity.”

Earlier in the day, at 5 PM, Professor Muhammad Yunus read the July Declaration at a mass gathering at the South Plaza of the National Parliament, in the presence of all parties to the mass uprising.

Notably, on August 5 last year, amid a massive student-public movement, Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister and left for India, ending the Awami League’s 16-year rule. Three days later, on August 8, the interim government’s advisory council, led by Muhammad Yunus, took the oath at Bangabhaban.
