July Charter: Meeting with political parties today on legal basis

The National Consensus Commission is holding a meeting with political parties today to determine the legal basis and implementation process of the July Charter. Sources from several invited parties said the commission’s Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, may also attend.
The dialogue is scheduled for Sunday (September 14) at 2:30 PM.
Several political parties, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), have been invited. According to the BNP Press Wing, the party will be represented by Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed.
The commission previously met with political parties on September 11. Although the implementation of the July Charter was discussed, no final decision was reached. The commission does not want to move forward without consensus among the political parties.
Led by Dr. Ali Riaz, the commission has proposed four options for implementing the July Charter: a referendum, a special constitutional order, a decree, or an executive order. Today’s meeting will focus on identifying the most acceptable method.
While there is basic agreement among political parties on the July Charter itself, opinions differ on the implementation strategy. Some advocate for constitutional amendments, while others prefer rapid implementation through an executive order.
According to the commission, the July Charter is not only a framework for political reform but also a long-term roadmap that will strengthen the country’s democracy and good governance. Effective implementation, however, requires full political consensus.
