Abu Sayed murder: 10th day of testimony today

The tenth day of testimony against 30 accused, including former VC of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), Hasibur Rashid, in the crimes against humanity case over the killing of student Abu Sayed during the July uprising, will be held today.
The testimony is scheduled to be taken by a three-member judicial panel led by Tribunal-2 Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury on Monday (October 13).

The ninth day of testimony and interrogation ended on October 6. Today was set for the next day of testimony. Two police sub-inspectors gave their statements that day. They are SI Rafiq and SI Raihanul Raj Dulal. Both testified as witnesses for the seizure list. Later, they were interrogated by the lawyers of the arrested persons, including four state defence lawyers, on behalf of the 24 absconding accused.

Prosecutors Moinul Karim and Abdus Sobhan Tarafdar, accompanied by Prosecutor Sultan Mahmud, appeared for the prosecution at the tribunal.

Earlier, on September 29, the eighth day of testimony and interrogation ended. Three people gave their statements that day. On September 22, on the seventh day, the state defence and defence lawyers first questioned Siam Ahsan Ayan, who testified as witness number six. Ayan testified in the case on September 21. He was the first to come forward to take Abu Sayed to the hospital after he was shot. This witness also gave a full account in his testimony.

The fifth day of interrogation ended on September 14. On that day, Anisur Rahman, a librarian of the International Crimes Tribunal’s investigation agency, was interrogated. On September 9, he testified as witness number five on the fourth day. On the same day, SI Md. Tariqul Islam also gave a statement.

On September 8, the state defence and defence lawyers concluded the cross-examination of Dr. Rajibul Islam, an assistant professor at the Department of Forensic Medicine at Rangpur Medical College, who testified in the case. He gave his statement on September 7. The second witness, AKM Moinul Haque, a senior correspondent of NTV working in Rangpur, was also cross-examined that day.

The testimony in the case began on August 28 with the testimony of Maqbul Hossain, the father of Abu Sayed, the first martyr of the July Movement. Journalist Moinul Haque also testified on the same day.

The six accused arrested in the case are ASI Amir Hossain, former proctor of Begum Rokeya University (BEROBI) Shariful Islam, constable Sujan Chandra Roy, Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury, Rafiul Hasan Russell and Anwar Parvez.

The formal trial of the case began on August 27 with the presentation of the opening statement. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam presented the opening statement. On August 6, the tribunal ordered the trial to begin by framing formal charges against 30 accused. However, 24 people, including the former VC of Berobi, are still absconding in this case. Four lawyers were appointed on their behalf at government expense on July 22.

On July 30, four state-appointed lawyers held a hearing on behalf of the accused who had absconded. Lawyer Sujat Mia represented five of them. Lawyer Mamunur Rashid represented the banned Chhatra League leaders. Lawyers Ishrat Jahan and Shahidul Islam also held the hearing. On July 29, a hearing was held on behalf of three accused. Lawyer Aminul Gani Tito represented Shariful. Lawyer Azizur Rahman Dulu represented Constable Sujan, and lawyer Salahuddin Rigyan represented Imran.

The prosecution concluded the hearing on framing charges against the 30 accused in the case on July 28. The tribunal took formal note of the charges on June 30. And on June 24, the investigation agency officials submitted the investigation report of the case. There are a total of 62 witnesses in the case.
