Continuous rains of the last few days have caused extensive damage to the planted Aman and vegetable fields in Satkhira. The Agriculture Department says that at least 3,000 hectares of planted Aman paddy have been submerged.
In addition, 150 hectares of seedbeds and 500 hectares of summer vegetables have been submerged in water. Especially the marginal farmers who have planted paddy in advance have been the most affected.

According to the Agricultural Extension Department, the target of planting Aman in 88,770 hectares of land has been set in the district for the current season. So far, 30-40 percent of the land has been cultivated. However, at least 10,000 Aman farmers have been affected due to the continuous rains for the past few days.

Farmer Aminur Rashid of Maaskhola village in Sadar upazila has prepared 20 bighas of land for planting Aman in the current season. He has already planted seedlings in eight bighas of land. He has kept seedlings ready in the seedbeds for planting the remaining land. However, the seedbed and the planted paddy fields of eight bighas of land have been submerged under three to four feet of water due to the continuous rain for about 10 days. They are facing a dilemma as there is no system to drain the water in the beel.

He said that waterlogging has occurred as the canal in the beel is not open. The planted Aman and vegetable fields have been submerged.

Farmer Sirajul Islam of the same village said that he has cultivated 87 and Gutiswarna varieties of paddy on 15 bighas of land this season. He also planted paddy seedlings two weeks ago. But due to the rains of a few days, the paddy fields have been submerged in waist-deep water. The largest beel in the district headquarters is in Jugrajpur village. 100% of the crops in the beel are submerged under water. Two to two and a half thousand farmers have been affected by this.

Farmer Masud Hossain of Kukhrali village of Satkhira said that after the seedbed was prepared, he had only started planting Ropa Aman paddy. But due to the heavy rains for a few days, their paddy fields, including their seedbeds, have been submerged in 8 to 10 bighas of land. Not only them, but the entire area is submerged in water.

The vegetables of Mostafizur Rahman of Nagarghata village in Tala upazila, on four bighas of land, have been submerged under one and a half to two hands of water. Vegetables worth at least Tk 3 lakh, including dal, barbati, patol, mukhikachu and ol, are being destroyed.

Deputy Director of the Satkhira Agricultural Extension Department Md. Saiful Islam said that due to the heavy rains for a few days, about 3,000 hectares of planted Aman paddy and 150 hectares of seedbeds in the district have been submerged. In addition, vegetables of about 500 hectares of land have been submerged in water.

He also said that the most damaged are the planted Aman, seedbeds and vegetable fields.
