Commonwealth SG arrives in Dhaka today
Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey makes her first official visit to Bangladesh on Thursday. She will be in Bangladesh from November 20 to November 24.
Bangladesh is going to have a national election in February 2026. Before that, the Commonwealth Secretary-General is coming to Bangladesh to discuss the areas of mutual interest, including deepening ongoing engagement to support continued national progress for the people’s aspirations for “peace and stability, democracy and good governance, and prosperity” in Bangladesh.
During her visit, Shirley will meet with important people in Bangladesh. She will talk with the acting government’s chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus. She will also meet with political leaders, the Chief Election Commissioner, high commissioners from different countries, and other representatives.
Shirley will also present the Commonwealth’s new ‘Strategic Plan’ to the people involved. One of the main parts of this plan is democracy. She will listen to how support can best help the people of Bangladesh.
Regarding her visit, Shirley said that the Commonwealth and Bangladesh share a strong partnership. As Bangladesh gets ready for elections next year, this partnership is even more important.
She added, “Our shared goal with Bangladesh is to support a peaceful, inclusive, and participative environment where everyone’s rights and freedoms are respected.”
Shirley also said, “That is what the people of Bangladesh expect from us. They can trust the Commonwealth to help build a fair, inclusive, and prosperous future for everyone.”
She wished the people of Bangladesh good luck as they prepare to vote. She also reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s full support for their democratic journey.
Last month, a Commonwealth team visited Bangladesh to help with the upcoming elections.
