The Commonwealth has expressed condolences over the death of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, and has also voiced concern about the current situation in Bangladesh following recent violence.

In a statement published on the Commonwealth’s website on Saturday (December 20), Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey expressed her condolences.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General said, “I join the people of Bangladesh in mourning the death of Sharif Osman Hadi and extend my heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones. I am deeply concerned about the current situation in Bangladesh following the recent violence in Dhaka and other parts of the country.”

“I urge the Government of Bangladesh to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of all, including journalists. In this regard, I welcome the statement of the Interim Government, which has pledged to hold those responsible for the violence accountable and has called on all to exercise restraint, act responsibly, and reject hatred. At this critical time, I join this call to maintain peace and to demonstrate the utmost patience and prudence,” she added.
