Law Minister Anisul Huq today said that the government would amend the Digital Security Act (DSA) to stop its abuse.

Anisul Huq said this while speaking after attending the third-day conference of the deputy commissioners at Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Thursday.

“We will incorporate all good practices in the law as much as needed to make it modified,” he said.

“We discussed the DSA issue with the Human Rights office of the United National twice. A committee has been constituted led by the Secretary of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division Secretary. We have expressed willingness to hold further talks with UN office and asked for a date,” said the Minister.

Anisul Huq also said he requested the home minister to take necessary step so that a journalist, if sued under DSA, is not arrested in the primary stage.

The incident of the arrest of the journalists sued under DSA will significantly decline following the initiative, he added.

Asked about role of the committee, he said the same will work for controlling cyber crimes, not for harassing journalists.

“The freedom of press is guaranteed by the Constitution. Had any law been made to harass journalists, it would be scrapped.”

Replying to a query, he said a law on the constitution of the Election Commission may be passed by the parliament in the current session.

About a demand to put land registration under land ministry, he said the registration department will continue to be under the law ministry as per decision of the Prime Minister.

On the other hand, he addressed the DC conference and asked the deputy commissioners to make sure that DSA is not being abused.

If any case is filed under the DSA, it has to be sent to the cell concerned for scrutiny, he added.
